The first weeks of the new season at HC Bienne are already a thing of the past. This period has so far been very intense, but enjoyable. I have met many people and I like Seeland, my new place of residence. It is also very nice to observe how quickly I was integrated into the new team.
Explaining Diabetes in Personal
Conversations At first, diabetes was naturally the subject of many conversations. Almost everyone is surprised to see what is exactly the blood glucose measurement and I am wearing a device on the side of the abdomen (insulin pump).
I could of course make a presentation and give explanations to everyone at once, but I find it more pleasant and more personal to wait for people to talk to me so that I can explain to them what is important in diabetes.
One to two blood sugar measurements during drinking breaks
This summer training is very intense: we train twice a day from Monday to Friday and practice a wide variety of sports. This means to me that the efforts are often very varied and so that my blood sugar reacts each time differently.
The fact that we are in the weight room, play football or have a long bike ride plays an important role in my preparation. Anyway, I always have a glucose gel on hand during workouts and I measure my blood sugar once or twice during breaks to drink.
Despite the challenge, I find it always interesting to live new situations and analyze in retrospect why my blood sugar has reacted in a particular way. Because when one is diabetic, one has never finished learning!
I'm enjoying the rest of the summer now and I'm looking forward to being on the ice soon.
